Claude pricing explained: Free, Pro, Max, Team
Free costs $0, Pro is $20/month (or $17 billed annually), Max runs $100-200/month, and Team is $25-125 per seat. Here's what each actually includes.
The short answer
Claude has five tiers. Free is $0. Pro is $20/month, or $17/month billed annually. Max starts at $100/month for 5x Pro's usage, or $200/month for 20x. Team runs $25/seat (Standard) or $125/seat (Premium) monthly, cheaper billed annually. Enterprise is custom-priced through sales. The part nobody advertises well: none of the paid tiers come with a published message cap, just relative multipliers.

Free: $0
Free gets you real Claude, not a stripped demo. Chat on web, iOS, Android, and desktop; code generation; web search; memory across conversations; file creation and code execution; desktop extensions; Slack and Google Workspace connections; remote MCP connectors; extended thinking. The default model is Sonnet 5, the same one Pro users get for everyday chats. If you're a student, the Claude student discount is worth checking before paying full price, and if you're weighing the paid models, Claude Opus vs. Sonnet breaks down when Opus is worth it.
What you don't get: Projects (a persistent workspace with attached files and custom instructions), Claude Code, and a usage ceiling low enough that regular users hit it. For the full breakdown of what's actually inside Free, see is Claude free.
Pro: $20/month, or $17/month billed annually
Everything in Free, plus a meaningfully bigger usage allowance, unlimited Projects, Claude Code, Cowork, Research mode, and Microsoft 365 integration. This is the plan most individual daily users land on. It does not include API usage, which is billed separately and pay-per-token through the Claude Console.
Max: $100/month (5x) or $200/month (20x usage)
Everything in Pro, plus your choice of 5x or 20x Pro's usage ceiling, priority access to new models during peak load, and higher output limits. Max is priced for people who run Claude constantly through the day, especially in Claude Code or long agentic sessions where Pro's cap gets tight.
Unlike Pro and Team, Anthropic doesn't list an annual discount for Max on its pricing page as of this writing, only the monthly rate. Mobile app pricing can differ slightly by platform, per Anthropic's own help docs.
Team: $25 or $125 per seat, monthly (cheaper annually)
Team has two seat types. Standard is $25/month per seat ($20 billed annually), roughly Pro-level usage per person. Premium is $125/month per seat ($100 billed annually), roughly Max-level usage per person. Either way you get centralized billing, SSO, role-based access, enterprise search, admin controls over connectors, and a default of no model training on your organization's content. Anthropic positions Team for groups of 5 to 150 seats.
Enterprise: custom
Enterprise starts around $20/seat plus metered usage that scales with model and task, but the real price is negotiated with sales. It adds spend limits, SCIM provisioning, audit logs, a Compliance API, custom data retention, network access controls, IP allowlisting, and an optional HIPAA configuration. This is the tier for organizations past a couple hundred seats with real compliance requirements, not a bigger version of Team you self-serve into.
Which plan should you actually pick
If you're not sure Claude fits your workflow yet, start on Free. It's not a trial, it's a real tier with no expiration and no card required.
Move to Pro once Free's cap starts interrupting real work, which for most daily users happens within the first couple of weeks. Twenty dollars a month buys Projects, Claude Code, and enough headroom that you stop thinking about the limit.
Max only makes sense if you're already hitting Pro's ceiling regularly, usually because you're running long agentic coding sessions or processing large documents back to back. Start with Max 5x; jump to 20x only after you've actually run into 5x's wall, not preemptively.
Team is for the moment a single Pro seat stops being the unit of billing, i.e., once you're paying for more than a couple of people and want one invoice, shared admin controls, and org-wide connector policy instead of everyone on separate personal accounts. If you're weighing Claude against a Pro-tier ChatGPT subscription instead, Claude vs. ChatGPT covers that comparison, paid tiers included.
Annual billing: how much it actually saves
Pro, Team Standard, and Team Premium all discount when you pay for the year upfront. Pro drops from $20/month to $17/month, which is $204 for the year instead of $240, a savings of $36, or 15%. Team Standard drops from $25 to $20/seat/month, saving $60/seat/year. Team Premium drops from $125 to $100/seat/month, saving $300/seat/year, the biggest raw discount on the table.
Max is the outlier: no annual option is listed on Anthropic's pricing page, so you're on the monthly rate either way.
The catch with any annual plan is the same as always: you're committing to a full year's cost upfront ($200 for Pro), and Anthropic's plans and prices are subject to change at its discretion. If you're not sure Claude is a long-term fit, a few months on the monthly rate before switching to annual costs you very little in exchange for the flexibility.
The usage cap nobody will give you a number for
This is the part that trips people up. Anthropic does not publish an exact message count for Free, Pro, or Max. The language it uses instead is deliberately relative: Pro gives you "at least five times the usage per session compared to our free service." How far that stretches depends on message length, attachments, conversation length, and which model or feature you're using, so two people on the same plan can hit the wall at very different points.
The one useful bit of math you can do yourself: Max 5x and 20x are multipliers on top of Pro, not on top of Free. Compounding the two official numbers gets you roughly 25x Free for Max 5x and roughly 100x Free for Max 20x, but that's an inference from Anthropic's own stated multipliers, not a number Anthropic states directly.
Is there a student discount?
No individual discount exists for Claude Pro. What does exist is Claude for Education, an institutional plan Anthropic sells directly to universities. If your school has signed an agreement, logging in with your university email auto-activates Pro-level features for your account. You can't buy your way into it as an individual student; it depends entirely on whether your institution has opted in.
What about API pricing?
If you're building something rather than chatting, that's a separate product entirely: the Claude API, billed per token through the Claude Console, not bundled into any Pro, Max, or Team seat. Current standard rates per million tokens: Opus 4.8 runs $5 input / $25 output, Sonnet 5 is $2 input / $10 output through an introductory window into late August 2026 before moving to $3/$15, and Haiku 4.5 is $1 input / $5 output.
Prompt caching cuts cached-input cost to a tenth of the base rate, and the Batch API halves both input and output pricing for non-urgent jobs.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Claude cost?
Free is $0, Pro is $20/month (or $17/month billed annually), Max starts at $100/month for 5x usage or $200/month for 20x, and Team runs $25-125 per seat monthly. Enterprise pricing is custom, arranged directly through Anthropic's sales team.
Is Claude Pro worth it?
If you're hitting Free's cap more than occasionally, yes: $20/month buys "at least 5x" the usage, unlimited Projects, and Claude Code access. If you only use Claude a few times a week, Free likely covers you without upgrading.
Is there a Claude student discount?
No individual discount exists for Claude Pro. The real student route is Claude for Education, an institutional plan; if your school has signed on, your university email auto-activates Pro-level features, but you can't purchase it on your own.
What's the difference between Pro and Max?
Max is Pro with a much bigger usage allowance: 5x or 20x Pro's limits for $100 or $200/month, plus priority access during high-traffic periods and higher output caps. Pro itself gives "at least 5x" Free's usage; Max multiplies further from there.
If you're deciding whether to sign up at all, is Claude free walks through exactly what you get at $0 before you commit to anything. And once you've picked a tier, getting started covers account setup.
