Cancel Claude subscription: web, iPhone, Android, Team

On the web, go to Settings > Billing and click Cancel. App Store or Google Play plans cancel in the store. Your chats stay, and refunds are rare.

To cancel a Claude subscription on the web or desktop app: click your initials or name in the lower left, open Settings, go to Billing and click Cancel. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel there under Billing > Manage subscription, or in your Apple or Google Play account. Your plan stays active until the end of the billing period.

This page covers every route, what happens after you cancel, refunds, and when deleting the account is the better call. claude/for is independent and not affiliated with Anthropic; all steps were checked against Anthropic's help center on October 22, 2026.

TL;DR: Cancel where you paid. Web and desktop: Settings > Billing > Cancel. iOS and Android: Billing > Manage subscription in the app, or the store. Do it at least 24 hours before renewal. Chats, projects and files are kept, and the account drops to the Free plan.

First, find out where you paid

This is the step that trips people up. Claude bills you through whichever place you signed up, and only that place can cancel. Anthropic's cancellation article says to follow the instructions "for the platform you signed up on."

  • Signed up on claude.ai or in Claude Desktop: Anthropic bills you, and the Cancel button lives in Settings > Billing.
  • Subscribed inside the iPhone or iPad app: Apple bills you.
  • Subscribed inside the Android app: Google Play bills you.
  • On a Team or Enterprise plan: your organization pays, and only an Owner or Primary Owner can cancel.

If Settings > Billing on the web shows no Cancel button, you most likely paid through a store. Deleting the app from your phone does not cancel anything.

How to cancel on the web or desktop app

now

Open your account menu

Log in at claude.ai or open Claude Desktop, then click your initials or name in the lower left corner.

next

Go to Settings, then Billing

Select Settings from the menu and open the Billing section.

next

Click Cancel

Follow the prompts to confirm. Your paid plan keeps working until the current billing period ends.

next

Check the date

Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date, or you may be charged for one more period.

These are the exact steps in Anthropic's cancellation article, and the claude.com/pricing FAQ gives the same path: "go to Settings > Billing and click Cancel."

How to cancel on iPhone (App Store)

In the Claude for iOS app, tap your initials in the top right corner, tap Billing, then Manage subscription, and follow the prompts. That hands you over to Apple's subscription screen.

If you already deleted the app, cancel from your Apple Account instead, using Apple's cancel a subscription guide. Anthropic cannot cancel an App Store subscription for you, because Apple holds the billing.

How to cancel on Android (Google Play)

In the Claude for Android app, tap your initials in the top right corner, tap Billing, then Manage subscription, and follow the prompts.

If the app is gone, open Google Play and follow Google's cancel, pause, or change a subscription steps: go to your subscriptions in Google Play, select Claude and tap Cancel subscription. Google notes that uninstalling the app does not cancel it.

Team and Enterprise: who can cancel

On a Team plan, members cannot cancel. Anthropic's Team cancellation article says "an Owner or Primary Owner can cancel Team plan access," under Organization settings > Billing. The team keeps access until the end of the current cycle and is not charged for the next one.

Two things to know before you click. After cancelling, you can no longer remove members from Organization settings > Members, so tidy the member list first or contact Support later. Self-serve Enterprise works like Team. Sales-assisted Enterprise has no button: the pricing FAQ says to contact your Anthropic contact or the Sales team.

What happens after you cancel

Nothing changes until the period ends. Anthropic's article says "your cancellation will take effect at the end of your current billing period," and you can keep using the paid plan until then.

After that, the pricing FAQ is clear: "Canceling doesn't delete your data. Your chats, projects, and files stay with your account, though some features aren't available on the Free plan. For Pro and Max, your account moves to the Free plan once the period ends." What the Free plan still includes is in our is Claude free guide.

If your Max or Team plan came with monthly API credits, cancelling stops new ones. Credits you already have stay usable until they expire at the end of the cycle, and they cannot be refunded.

Downgrade Max to Pro instead of cancelling

If Max is more than you need but you still use Claude daily, a downgrade may suit you better than a cancel. The pricing FAQ says to change plans in Settings > Billing, then Manage subscription. Pro costs $20/month billed monthly, against Max from $100/month.

Per the same FAQ, "downgrades take effect at the end of your current billing period," and your chats, projects and files stay with your account on any plan. Our Claude pricing guide compares what each tier gets, and Claude usage limits explains how much Pro's allowance really covers.

Can you get a refund?

Usually not. Anthropic's refund article says payments are non-refundable except where the Consumer Terms or the law say otherwise. You can still ask, and the messenger tells you whether you qualify:

now

Open Get help

Log in, click your initials or name in the lower left, and select Get help.

next

Start a refund request

Click Send us a message, then choose Claude Refund Request.

next

Pick a reason

Follow the prompts. If you are eligible, the messenger cancels and refunds the plan in the same flow.

The exceptions, all from that article:

  • EEA and UK: within 14 days of purchase you may get a refund, prorated for your usage. The option may appear in your Settings.
  • iPhone purchases: Apple decides. Request it at reportaproblem.apple.com. A refund request does not cancel the subscription, so cancel separately.
  • Google Play purchases: Support checks eligibility for active subscriptions.
  • Open card dispute: Support cannot refund while a chargeback is pending.
  • Locked out: write to Support from another email and CC the address on the account.

Cancel vs delete your account

Cancelling stops the billing and keeps your history. Deleting is permanent: Anthropic's account deletion article says you lose your conversations, projects and saved data, and the account cannot be recovered.

If you want both, the order matters. Cancel the paid plan first, wait until the billing period ends, export anything you want to keep, then go to Settings > Account and click Delete account.

The honest limits

Everything above comes from Anthropic's help center and pricing page, not from our own cancellation. Anthropic does not document a few things: whether a downgrade from Max to Pro refunds any difference, how long chats are kept after a plan ends, or what Team members' data becomes after a Team plan lapses.

Mixed billing can also get stuck. In GitHub issue #43249, a user who paid on the website and later installed the iOS app reports that the website sent them to the app, and the app sent them to a different App Store account. The issue was closed without a public fix. If you hit that loop, contact Support from Get help.

Questions people ask

How do I cancel my Claude subscription?

On the web or desktop app, click your initials or name, open Settings > Billing and click Cancel. If you paid through the iPhone or Android app, use Billing > Manage subscription in the app, or your Apple or Google Play account.

Does Claude give refunds?

Rarely. Payments are generally non-refundable, but you can check eligibility through Get help > Claude Refund Request. EEA and UK users may get a prorated refund within 14 days. App Store refunds go through Apple, not Anthropic.

Will I lose my chats if I cancel Claude?

No. Anthropic's pricing FAQ says cancelling doesn't delete your data: chats, projects and files stay with your account, which moves to the Free plan at the end of the period. Some features stop working on Free.

Can I cancel Claude and keep using it until the end of the month?

Yes. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period, and you keep the paid plan until then. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge.

Why can't I find the cancel button for Claude?

Most likely you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, so the web Billing page cannot cancel it. On a Team plan, only an Owner or Primary Owner sees the option, under Organization settings > Billing.

Anthropic changes plans and billing rules with little notice. The newsletter sends one short note when it does.
