'Upload failed due to a network issue' in Claude: the fix
Claude's 'Upload failed due to a network issue' is rarely your Wi-Fi. Check the file limits, make a local copy, turn off VPNs and extensions, then retry.
"Upload failed due to a network issue. Check your internet connection and try again." That red banner in claude.ai means your file never finished reaching Claude. Despite the wording, your internet is often fine. The fastest fix: check the file against Anthropic's limits, save a fresh local copy, turn off any VPN or ad blocker, refresh the page and upload again.
If that fails, check whether Claude itself is having an upload incident. All of this comes from Anthropic's help center and status page, checked October 22, 2026, plus a clearly labeled community workaround.
TL;DR: Chat files can be up to 500MB each, 20 per chat, PDFs up to 1,000 pages; Project files cap at 30MB. Close the file in other apps, make a real local copy, turn off VPNs and extensions, refresh, retry. Still failing? Check status.claude.com.
The exact wording, and its variants
We could not trigger the error ourselves, so here is the wording as reported, with where we saw it:
- "Upload failed due to a network issue. Check your internet connection and try again." Quoted in full in a LinkedIn post by John Crickett, and the title of an r/ClaudeAI thread.
- "Upload failed due to a network issue", the short form most people search, used as the title of the biggest r/ClaudeAI thread on it (140+ comments). Its author says their connection was "totally fine".
Anthropic's help center has no article for this exact message.
Why you see it
The banner covers any upload that does not complete, so several different problems produce the same text. The documented and reported ones:
- The file breaks a limit. Anthropic's file upload article sets the rules (see the table below). Anthropic does not say which message an oversized file shows, so rule this out first.
- Something between you and Claude blocks the request. For generic errors, Anthropic's error messages article tells you to turn off any VPN, disable browser extensions and clear your cache and cookies.
- Claude's upload service is down. The status page has logged upload outages, such as "file upload broken on /new" on October 23, 2025 and "Elevated errors with uploading files to claude.ai" five days later.
- The file is not really on your computer. A common workaround, not documented by Anthropic: third-party fix guides such as LeadSource's report the banner when a file is open in another program or is a cloud placeholder (OneDrive, Dropbox) that has not downloaded.
The documented file limits
From Anthropic's upload article, updated July 2026:
| In a chat | In a Project's files | |
|---|---|---|
| Size per file | 500MB | 30MB |
| Number of files | Up to 20 per chat | Unlimited, but the content must fit Claude's context window |
| PDFs | Up to 1,000 pages | Text extraction, except multimodal PDFs |
| Images | Up to 8000x8000 pixels |
Supported documents: PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, ODT, RTF, EPUB, JSON and XLSX. XLSX only works with code execution and file creation turned on in your settings. Supported images: JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP.
Two details catch people. A PDF over 100 pages is read as text only, so its charts and scans are ignored. For DOCX and other non-PDF documents, Claude extracts the text and cannot see embedded images.

How to fix it
Work down the list and retry the upload after each step, cheapest checks first.
Check the file against the limits
Under 500MB in a chat, 30MB in a Project, 1,000 pages for a PDF, and a supported type. If not, split it or convert it (a spreadsheet to CSV, a Pages file to PDF).
Make a real local copy
Close the file in Word, Excel or any other app. If it lives in OneDrive or Dropbox, download it or save a copy to your desktop and upload that copy.
Turn off VPN and extensions
Disconnect any VPN, pause ad blockers and privacy extensions, or try a private window where extensions are off.
Refresh, or clear site data
Reload claude.ai. If it still fails, clear your browser cache and cookies, sign in again and retry.
Check status.claude.com
If an upload incident is open, nothing on your side will fix it. Wait for the resolved notice.
Try another browser, app or network
Switch between the website and the desktop or mobile app, or tether to your phone, to rule out an office firewall.
If every file fails, on every browser, with no incident posted, contact support from the help center and say which steps you already tried.
The other upload errors people hit
These come with different wording, and each has its own fix. Each is quoted verbatim from Anthropic:
- "Uploaded file is too large": shown for a PDF over 1,000 pages, per the upload article. The fix is page count, not megabytes: split the PDF.
- "Your message will exceed the length limit for this chat. Try attaching fewer or smaller files or starting a new conversation." The upload worked, but the files hold too much text for one chat, per the error messages article. Send fewer files, ask for a summary first, or start a new chat.
A long reply that stops halfway is a separate limit again, covered in Claude's max length pause.
How to stop it happening again
- Keep a clean upload folder. Save files there as local copies before attaching them. This avoids the open-file and cloud-placeholder problem.
- Put reference files in a Project once. Under 30MB each, they stay attached for every chat. See how Claude Projects work.
- Convert awkward formats first. Export big spreadsheets to CSV, and scanned documents to a PDF under 100 pages if you need Claude to see the images.
- Allow claude.ai in your blockers. Whitelisting the site saves you switching extensions off every time.
Where this fix runs out
Anthropic documents the limits and generic troubleshooting, but no fix for this specific banner. The cloud-file explanation comes from community reports, not Anthropic. If your upload fails during an outage, no setting on your side helps. On a work account, an IT firewall can block uploads in a way you cannot change, so ask IT or use another network.
Questions people ask
Why does Claude say upload failed when my internet works?
The banner shows for any upload that does not complete, whatever the cause. A file over the limit, a VPN or extension blocking the request, a file still open elsewhere, or a Claude outage can all trigger it while your connection is fine.
What is the file size limit on Claude?
In a chat, 500MB per file and up to 20 files, with PDFs up to 1,000 pages. In a Project's files, 30MB per file, with no fixed count but a total that must fit Claude's context window. Those are Anthropic's published limits as of July 2026.
Why can't I upload an Excel file to Claude?
XLSX uploads need code execution and file creation turned on in your settings, according to Anthropic. If you cannot turn it on, export the sheet to CSV, which is always supported. Our Claude for Excel guide covers working with spreadsheets.
Is Claude down for uploads right now?
Check status.claude.com. Anthropic posts upload incidents there with investigating, fix and resolved updates. If nothing is listed and every file fails, the cause is more likely on your side.
